2009 MLB Playoff Predictions

My predictions for the 2009 MLB playoffs:

National League:
1. Los Angeles Dodgers - NL West Champions
2. St. Louis Cardinals - NL Central Champions
3. Philadelphia Phillies - NL East Champions
4. Colorado Rockies - NL Wild Card Champions

American League:
1. New York Yankees - AL East Champions
2. Los Angeles Angels - AL West Champions
3. Detroit Tigers - AL Central Champions
4. Boston Red Sox - AL Wild Card Champions

National League Division Series:
Phillies over Dodgers in five games
Cardinals over Rockies in four games

National League Championship Series:
Phillies over Cardinals in seven games

American League Division Series:
Yankees over Tigers in four games
Angels over Red Sox in four games

American League Championship Series:
Angels over Yankees in seven games

World Series:
Phillies over Angels in six games

A Few Points:
1. This HAS to be the season that the Angels end their hex against the Red Sox.  Boston has dominated L.A. in the Division Series in each of the past two seasons.  This season, I don't feel like the Red Sox have near enough pitching to shut down the Angels' potent offense.  L.A. will finally put an end to their bad luck and get over to the hump to the ALCS.

2. I like what the Rangers have accomplished this season.  They have the pitching to stay in the race until the end, but I think they will prove to be too inconsistent to reach the playoffs.  The Red Sox have struggled in the second half with shoddy starting pitching, an inconsistent offense, and a lot of aging stars, yet they've still managed to stay in or be close to the Wild Card lead.  I think they have enough to hold off Texas.

3. I like the Phillies to win it all again because of their starting pitching and their offense.  It is too difficult to shut down Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Raul Ibanez, Jason Werth and co. for an extended period of time, and I think Cliff Lee will be able to recover from a rough last two starts to dominate down the stretch and throughout the playoffs.  However, Philly could just as easily be knocked out early because of a questionable bullpen, particularly Brad Lidge

4. The Giants have the starting pitching to stay in the NL Wild Card race until the very end, but their poor offense will prove to be their downfall.  The Rockies have a dangerous-enough offense and just enough starting pitching to hold off SF.

2009 MLB Playoff Predictions

Interesting analysis. I am afraid I have to disagree with it though. I do believe you have the right team outcomes for the teams but the incorrect estimations.

Granted the Phillies do have a dangerous offense, with a pitching line up like Billingsly, Kershaw, Kuroda, and with the way Wolf has stepped up when any of them is not healthy. Those pitchers will be able to shut down the Phillies line up. On top of that since acquiring Manny the dodgers have done a lot better with their offense. With hitters like Eithier, Kemp and Loney to compliment Manny the Dodgers are a powerful lineup to stop. Not only that but to finish games Brad Lidge is so far 0-8 with a 7.51 ERA and 11 blown saves. With Dodgers closers like Sherrill and Broxton. If you look at a picture in a whole I think the Phillies are lucky to even make it to the playoffs but they will be knocked out in the first round in 4 games.

With the Cardinals and the Rockies I actually disagree with you again. The Rockies are no joke. They are finishing the season with a bang and will take the Cardinals out of the playoffs in 5 games.

With the Yankees and the Tigers once again I disagree. The Yankees have choked too many times and I believe they will do it once again. The tigers have some strong bats in their line ups like Polanco, Granderson, Laird, and Everett. I do believe that the Yankees will screw themselves over again in the playoffs and blow it. Tigers in 5 games. Different story if the twins come through in the playoffs. Yes they are on fire but every flame burns out at some point. if the Twins make it then I have the Yankees sweep 3-0.

Angels and Red Sox. Wrong again. Red Sox have been here to many times. Though they don't have Manny anymore they are still a powerhouse team with the pitching to back that up. Angels will not break the hex yet it is just not the year for them. Red Sox will take this one in 4 games.
Now we get to the race to the world series.

Dodgers and Rockies. This is where the road ends. Once again the Dodgers are unstoppable with their pitching and there big bats. Dodgers will take this one in 5 games to make it to the World series.

Tigers and Red Sox. Tigers do have a good team and one that will take them places in the future but this is the year. The Red Sox will take that series in 5 games.

My prediction for the World Series this year is going to be the Dodgers and the Red Sox. Both have very strong line ups and this one is going to come out to the pitching performances. If the Dodgers starters stay healthy then I do believe that they will have the performances. Dodgers will take the World Series this year in 6 games.
